A short history of the owner… that lead to this position of madness
Riaan is the son of a professional educator, who appears to have placed enough emphasis on his childhood development, to nurture a pioneering and creative entrepreneur. To him, life’s challenge is creating the extraordinary, which in the wine industry, can be a moving target.
Schooled in the heart of the winelands at Paul Roos Gymnasium, he was exposed to the wonders of the wine industry from an early age. This industry exposure was further enriched during his period at Stellenbosch University where his technical expertise was honed as a CA.
He was intensely involved in the mechanics of the wine industry as Operations Director of the then Distillers Corporation, where his responsibilities covered most key aspects of the industry. His diverse ability is reflected in his move to the banking industry, where he pioneered the fastest growing retail bank in South Africa as CEO of Capitec Bank. These challenges would have, undoubtedly, further exposed him to consumer behaviour in the wine industry.
His passion for art, music, fine dining, fast cars and finance is further evidence of his diverse personality and enquiring mind. Memorable experiences are what he has pursued all his life and are, probably, the inspiration behind his return to the wine industry at Hidden Valley.
He is a perfectionist who relentlessly pursues a way of doing things that leaves no person unimpressed. This attribute of his has the greatest influence on his drive to create a truly unique experience for customers, at the winery amongst the stars.
He is, without a doubt, the hidden gem in our valley….
Annalie grew up in the Cape and studied viticulture and oenology at Stellenbosch University.
After graduating in 2008, she worked under Mike Dobrovic at Mulderbosch Vineyards and gained valuable knowledge about the production of quality white wine.
Her attention turned to the production of premium red wines when she joined 4G Wines in the Helderberg area. As part of this small venture, Annalie was able to be very hands-on in the vineyards.
Annalie also brings with her some impressive international experience, having worked with Andy Erickson of Screaming Eagle fame in Napa, California, where she gained experience with Cabernet Sauvignon.
She also spent some time in France’s Loire Valley, living la belle vie and drinking in the old-world charm while working with Sauvignon blanc, Chenin and Gamay.
Born in Somerset West, Daniël grew up near the Helderberg where his passion for nature was cultivated from an early age by the indigenous fauna and flora and surrounding winelands.
After completing his studies in Viticulture and Pomology and obtaining a B.Agric degree at Elsenburg Agricultural College, Daniël started working at Hidden Valley in November 2013. Daniël gained invaluable experience working under the mentorship of Johan (Grobbie) Grobbelaar, the previous farm manager/viticulturist at Hidden Valley.
Daniël believes that making quality wine starts in the vineyard by meticulously and constantly managing nature’s influences.
